5 Signs Your Child Needs An ADHD Evaluation

Posted on

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder that causes difficulty with concentration and hyperactivity. Children who are diagnosed with ADHD may have trouble paying attention in class and completing their homework. If you suspect that your child may have ADHD, it can be beneficial to schedule an ADHD evaluation with a professional soon.

Here are a few signs that your child needs an ADHD evaluation.

Inattention in Class

Children must pay careful attention to their teachers in class to fully understand the subject matter. Those with ADHD, however, may have trouble focusing on what their teachers are saying. If your child's teacher told you that your child often daydreams in class and seems disinterested, you may want to schedule an ADHD evaluation. The inability to pay attention in class can cause your child to fall behind and receive bad grades.

Procrastination

Children with ADHD often have difficulty finishing tasks on time. They may put off their homework and household chores until the last minute. If you have noticed that your child does not start his or her homework until the late evening or does not finish chores on time, it may be time to schedule an appointment with a professional.

Constant Interrupting

Does your child often interrupt people when they are talking or gives an answer before a question is completed? If so, your child may have ADHD and could benefit from getting evaluated by a professional.

Forgetfulness

If your child has ADHD, he or she may be quite forgetful. You might assign your child to wash the dishes and he or she forgets about it just minutes later. Your child may also forget where he or she left a homework assignment or backpack.

Hyperactivity

Many children can be hyperactive from time to time. However, if your child never seems to sit still and bounces from one activity to another, it is a cause for concern. When your child is sitting still, you may notice that he or she is squirming around. In this situation, it may be necessary to schedule an ADHD evaluation right away.

If your child is displaying any of these signs, you may want to schedule an ADHD evaluation as soon as possible. A doctor may use several tests to determine whether your child has ADHD or not. If your child does get an ADHD diagnosis, a doctor may talk about medication and other treatment options.
